Disclaimer: We received two of these books from the publisher – one to gift to a lucky reader and one for our boy. This review is based on his experience with the read and my background as a parent and writing/literacy teacher.
Have you ever had a “wiggly wriggly, Makes you giggly, Creepy crawly snug hug“? We recently added, “I’m Going to Give You a Bear Hug!” to our nap/bedtime book rotation and it’s been a fun experience for us. Reading is an activity we incorporate throughout our day: morning, before a nap and bedtime. It’s a great way to connect with each other through exploration, while providing a sense of comforting familiarity to our son.
On the initial read, he listened and watched with wide-eyed curiosity as the main character, a little boy, went on a hugging adventure towards his final stop, bedtime. After multiple reads, it’s fun to watch him excitedly point out and recall the animals, objects and actions he remembers. Throughout the day, he’ll randomly exclaim, “Horse Hug!” while running at us with arms and mouth wide open.
Not only are the illustrations vivid, but the depiction of familiar characters is expressive and engaging. We’re able to talk about the character’s emotions and interactions with one another. This gives us a lot to engage with in addition to the text, which is full of rhyme and needed repetition for a child’s language acquisition. You’ll enjoy reading this, especially if you’re swapping hugs throughout the story.
We look forward to hearing your experience with this book! You have until May 1st to enter for a chance to receive your gift that same month. Good luck!
